Salut! My name is Christopher Johnson. I have been teaching secondary English at the American School of Douala in Cameroon since November of 2020. I also work with the school’s Learning Support department to assist students facing extra challenges in and out of the classroom and just generally stay way busier than I need to be. My writings from my time in Cameroon are found in the blog titled “Centre-Ouest.”
Before the American School, I taught English as a Foreign Language in Kalar, a small city in east-central Iraq. I had been teaching English there since July of 2019 and hoped to stay here for some time. My dream was to start an English-language school that would set the standard for student-centered, international education in the region. While I taught English to our students at a private language center, the English Access Institute, my partners and I are also working hard to get this school up and running. My blog covering my time in Kurdistan is titled “Mamosta Qsa Akat,” and consists of my “impressions” of my time there: the raw, unfiltered and unedited scenes that we experience on a daily basis. This blog was also a challenge to myself – to see if I could write every day, to live consciously, to make some small impression in the universe around me. I hope that you find my writing to be somewhat enlightening.
Also on this website, I have another blog, “The View from Rubona,” which tells my story of living and teaching in Mucubira, my home in Rwanda as a Peace Corps Volunteer from 2017-2019. It’s a little more dense but is worth checking out if you want to see what life in that hidden gem of a country is like, or if you just want to read a really good love story.
The oldest writing on here is the blog “El Gato Maldito,” which are the journal entries I kept during a trip to South America in the summer of 2016. These journal entries were later compiled for my Honors Thesis at the University of South Florida, a final copy of which can be found on the El Gato Maldito page.
Finally, I want to use this writing as a springboard to journalistic pursuits. If you are interested in my writing and believe that I can offer your publication, blog, magazine or news outlet an interesting perspective, please contact me at chrisjohnson0207@gmail.com. My resume is included below.
Zor spass – Sorani Kurdish for thank you – for taking a moment to learn a little more about me. You’ll be hearing from me soon.
